The Keep Douglas Beautiful Committee held its first Trash Dash Plogging Event on Saturday, November 18, 2023. Over 60 volunteers walked the Greenway Trail to help pick up litter and collect debris along the trail. Two groups walked the trail from Chester Avenue to Douglas Square and collected over 50 bags of trash and two shopping carts.
“We were so excited to see how many came and supported our event,” says Keep Douglas Beautiful Board Executive Director, Christian Mikell. “We had a fantastic turnout and enjoyed the beautiful morning plogging along the trail.”
According to Keep America Beautiful’s website, plogging is the combination of picking up litter while jogging. Through the plogging trend, individuals are empowered to help remove litter and debris from the environment, ultimately creating cleaner and greener communities. Combining jogging with intermittent squatting, plogging also offers individuals exercise benefits. In fact, one hour of plogging burns an average of 288 calories; that compares with an average of 235 calories for jogging.
After the plogging event, volunteers were treated to a Grab-N-Go hamburger/hot dog lunch with drinks. Special thanks to everyone who supported and assisted with the Trash Dash – Douglas Fire Department, PCC Airfoils, Williams Institutional Foods, Flowers Baking Company, Mickey’s Food Store, Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council, Ambitious Young Men, Coffee Middle School Track, FCCLA, City of Douglas, and other volunteers.
