[ARCHIVED] WINTER STORM WARNING FOR DOUGLAS

Due to weather conditions on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, non-essential City of Douglas offices will be closed.  At this time, there is a strong potential for freezing rain/sleet during the overnight hours transitioning into snow as Wednesday morning nears.  Current predictions are calling for Coffee County to receive 2-4 inches of snow.

Citizens are urged to stay inside and off roadways.  Travel should be minimized, but, if travel is necessary, people should take necessary precautions.  Look for ice or black ice on roads and be cautious of bridges as bridges will ice before roads.  Remain alert for downed power lines in case of an icy buildup on tree limbs or powerlines.  If an icy powerline is broken, do not touch or attempt to move the line, call 9-1-1 and report the downed line.

Sprinkler systems should be turned off to prevent ice on the road.  Citizens should remember to check on elderly people who may live alone to ensure they have proper heating.  Bring pets inside from the weather.  If you cannot bring your pet inside, make sure they have a warm dry place to sleep and plenty of food and water.  Insulate your pipes with cloth or similar material to help prevent freezing.  Run at least one water faucet in the house/business at a thin stream which will lower the risk of broken water lines during freezing conditions.  For non-emergencies, dial 3-1-1 or 912-384-3302.  For emergencies, dial 9-1-1.
