The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DMYC) held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at 6 PM at the Youth Center. Following words of encouragement and prayer by Katrina Grantham, Angela Joiner was recognized as the outstanding community leader for February. The special guest speaker for the month of February was Coffee High School’s Head Football Coach, Mike Coe.
The Youth Council Jr. Commissioner Brody Grantham was recognized for this month’s Youth Council spotlight. Brody is the son of Samuel and Camilla Grantham. He is in the 9th grade at George Washington Carver Freshman Campus, where he is on track to graduate with Honors. In addition to being an active member of the Youth Council and Teen Court, Brody is also a scholar athlete with a 4.0 GPA. He plays defensive line for Coffee High School. After graduating, he plans to attend college, play football and pursue a degree in Veterinary Medicine.
The Youth Council chose Angela Joiner as the Outstanding Community Leader Spotlight for February. Ms. Joiner was recognized for her outstanding service as an exceptional educator for over 18 years. She has a Specialist Education Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and teaches Honors World History at George Washington Carver Freshman Campus. Ms. Joiner was applauded for her encouragement and availability to be there for students displaying she truly cares for all her students.
Jr. Commissioner Brody Grantham chose Coffee High School’s Head Football Coach, Mike Coe as the special guest speaker. Coach Coe spoke to the group about being active in youth sports and programs. Coach Coe believes in touching the lives of his players as he interacts daily with them through guidance and encouragement. He hopes his students choose to be “significant over being successful” and hopes as they graduate school they will make an impact on others.
An organizer of the Black Business and Organizations Expo, Dominic Mimbang (GWCFC Student and FBLA Member) presented information about the event and invited all to attend to see the various African-American-owned businesses and organizations showcased for the community. The event will be held on February 24, 3 PM, at the JD Murrary Gymnasium located at 1020 S. Gaskin Avenue. Following Mr. Mimbang, Mayor Tony Paulk spoke briefly about Black History Month and what it has meant to him to be the first African American Mayor of Douglas. He urged the council to always be vigilant in career and life goals to achieve their full potential to become leaders of the community.
The next Mayor’s Youth Council will be held on March 21, 2023, at 6 pm at City Hall. The public is invited to attend Youth Council meetings.
