As temperatures drop in the winter months, the Douglas Fire Department reminds everyone that winter is a peak season for home fires. Cold weather often leads to alternative heating methods, and festive decorations can increase fire risks.
“Winter fires are often preventable,” says Douglas Fire Chief Casey Wright. “By following these simple tips, you can help keep your family safe during the winter months.”
Fire Safety Tips to Remember:
- Stay alert in the kitchen: Never leave cooking unattended and avoid wearing loose clothing that could catch fire.
- Space heaters need space: Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn. Never use your stove as a heater.
- Heat Lamps: Perform regular inspections by checking the lamp cord and fixture for damage before use and ensure the bulb is tightly secured. Heat lamps should be at least 18 inches away from cloth, paper, and other combustible materials and at least 20 inches away from animals.
- Decorate safely: Choose flame-resistant or non-combustible decorations. Use lights approved by an independent testing lab and follow all manufacturer instructions.
- Avoid electrical overload: Don’t overload extension cords. Limit to 3 strands of push-in bulbs or 50 screw-in bulbs. Always unplug lights before changing bulbs or fuses.
- Protect kids and pets: Keep them away from lights, wiring, and electrical decorations.
- Turn off lights: Always switch off decorations before leaving home or going to bed.
- Inspect cords: Discard any lights with frayed wires or loose connections. Unplug & bring outdoor lights inside after the holidays.
- Candle safety: Keep candles away from flammable items.
- Store matches and lighters safely: Keep them locked and out of reach of children.
- Fireplace precautions: Have your chimney inspected before lighting a fire.
- Dryer safety: Clean lint regularly and never leave clothes drying when you leave home.
- Teach kids fire safety: Make sure children home alone know basic fire prevention steps.
