Due to recent officer related shootings across our nation, City of Douglas officials would like the community to know our police officers are here to protect and serve the citizens of Douglas. The Douglas Police Department would like to remind citizens how to properly interact with law enforcement so that incidents that have developed in other cities do not happen in our community.
When approached by a policeman, please remain calm. Be courteous and patient with the officer; what you say to police is always important. Do not attempt to flee, discard items or make any fast motions that may appear suspicious. Think carefully about your words, movements and body language. Show your ID or driver’s license and registration when you are stopped for a traffic violation. Do not argue with the officer and keep your hands where the officer can see them. If you feel you need to make a complaint against an officer, follow up at the police department.
“Our police department offers a variety of resources so that we can have long-term positive benefits for the community,” says Police Chief Gary Casteloes. “Often adults and children fear police, but, we do not want to instill that fear in our community. It is often overlooked how Police officers interact in our community in positive and uplifting ways. I would like to encourage citizens that if they see an officer, show them appreciation for risking their lives to keep our community safe.”
The Douglas Police Department is committed to providing an encouraging impact in our community. Through the Citizen’s Police Academy, it is hoped that citizens will become informed as to what role officers play in our community and familiarize citizens with some aspects of the law in an educational setting. Douglas Police Officers are also available to visit our local schools to help improve relations with children.
