The City of Douglas announces plans for hosting a variety of events in celebration of Georgia Cities Week, April 22 through April 28, 2012. The theme of this year’s Georgia Cities Week is The Magic of Cities, which will showcase how cities, through the services they provide and the quality of life they create, transform lives and businesses.
“We’re very proud of Douglas and the services we provide that make it attractive to residents and visitors,” said Mayor James Dennis. “Douglas provides the infrastructure for growing businesses, quality of life for individuals and families and is a gathering spot for people throughout the region.”
Activities planned for Georgia Cities Week will include: Monday, April 23rd, the City Commission will hold its regular meeting and will recognize the winners of the “If I were Mayor” Essay Contest. The contest was held in February and allowed 6th graders in Coffee County to write an essay about how they would run the City. At the Douglas City Cemetery on Tuesday, April 24, at 10am, there will be a Closing Dedication service for the old African American section of the cemetery. Coffee Alliance for Arts will host Munch and Music at Emma Ward Park at 12noon on Wednesday, April 25, and will showcase the talents of the Coffee High School Show Choir. Everyone is encouraged to walk in the Commit 2B Fit walk on Thursday, April 26 which begins at the Coffee County Alternative Education Center (old Pre-K Academy) at 5:30pm. Also on Thursday, April 26, a Town Hall meeting will be held at the C.E. Weir Center at 6:30pm, which will give citizen’s the opportunity to talk to local officials about concerns they may have that involve our city services. The Customer Service Department will host its Customer Appreciation Day on Friday, April 27 from 9am-4pm at City Hall, to express appreciation to loyal customers by serving popcorn and drinks. The weeklong celebration will conclude with the Coffee County Relay for Life Walk that begins on Friday, April 27, 7:00pm, through Saturday morning, April 28 at the Coffee Track on South Peterson Avenue.
