[ARCHIVED] YARD SALE PERMITS INCREASE TO $5 BEGINNING MAY 1ST

The City of Douglas will increase yard sale permits to $5.00 beginning May 1st. Garage and yard sales may be held by individuals for the purpose of disposing of personal items no longer needed or wanted, however; a permit must be obtained from City Hall prior to the sale date.

“The increase of cost for the permit is to help cover costs associated with issuing, recording, publicizing, and policing yard sales in the City,” says Tommy Harrell, Utility Customer Service Manager. “The yard sale permit is a method used by the city to help prevent individuals from operating a yard sale as a business instead of properly obtaining a business license with the city.”

When citizens go to City Hall to obtain their permit, they will be asked to complete a form that lists the date or dates of the sale, the name of the person conducting the sale, and the location of the sale. Only two (2) sales may be held by an individual in any calendar year and they cannot last no longer than two (2) consecutive days. As stated in city ordinance, any person found guilty of violations of the conditions of the ordinance, shall pay a fine as set in the schedule of fees and charges.
