The month of October will usher in several yearly promotions with the City of Douglas. Douglas Utilities, Douglas Fire, Douglas Police, Public Works/ESG Operations, and Keep Douglas Beautiful will all be hosting events throughout the month.
To kick off initiatives for October, Public Works/ESG Operations will offer Fall Junk Free Week will be Monday, October 2 through Friday, October 6, 2023, between the hours of 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, at 1101 Shirley Avenue, on the corner of Shirley and College Park Drive. On October 7, 2023, the Douglas Police Department will kick off the National Faith and Blue weekend with a FREE Movie. Popcorn and drinks will be provided – while supplies last. Faith & Blue Weekend was launched to facilitate safer, stronger, more just and unified communities by directly enabling local partnerships among law enforcement professionals, residents, businesses and community groups through the connections of local faith-based organizations. Thanks to our partners First Baptist Church and The Sanctuary. For more information, please call (912)384-2222.
The Douglas Utilities Department will be promoting Natural Gas Month throughout October. To schedule your free pilot lighting during business hours (M-F 8 am-5 pm), please call the Natural Gas division at (912)389-3427. Public Power week will be held Oct. 1 – 7, 2023. During this week, customers are encouraged to “thank a lineman” and to become more educated about the public utility services that are provided by Douglas Utilities.
The Douglas Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Prevention Week, October 8-14, 2023, to spread awareness of cooking safety. The FPW theme this year is “Cooking Safety Starts with YOU. Pay Attention to Fire Prevention.” The campaign works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take when cooking to keep themselves and those around them safe. The Fire Prevention Education Safety House will be used along with fire education programs for all ages through fire prevention presentations in schools, daycares, and other places of business. Douglas Utility customers can register at the City Hall (302 S. Madison Avenue) for a drawing that will be held on October 27, 2023, for FREE smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Through these educational, family-oriented activities, residents can learn more about the importance of fire escape plans, as well as the power of fire prevention and education. For more information about fire prevention week or Douglas Fire Department outreach programs, call (912) 384-4815.
