The City of Douglas has entered into a new contract with Transwaste Services, LLC, to provide collection, transportation, and disposal of garbage and recycling refuse for the citizens of Douglas. In order to provide a cleaner recycling waste stream and to honor customer requests for every week garbage pickup, the Mayor and Commission voted on proposed changes with the current contract. Under the new contract, regular residential garbage collection will be every week and if a customer wishes to continue recycling with the VOLUNTARY Recycling Program, the customer will have to request a Recycling Cart through the Customer Service Department located at City Hall. There will NOT be a rate increase created by the changes.
Beginning June 3, 2013, regular Residential Curbside (Green) garbage collection will be weekly. Each home in Douglas will be provided a 95 gallon cart to be serviced once a week. All residential solid waste stored outside the residence pending collection shall be placed in city approved trash receptacles. Under no circumstances will garbage outside of the city-issued container be collected. Beginning the evening before and no later than 6:00am on the day of collection, customers should place their container(s) at the curbside in front of the customer’s residence. The container should be removed from the curbside and returned to a location behind the customer’s residence or to a place that is outside of City’s right-of-way and out of view from the right-of-way no later than 6:00am following the scheduled day of service.
In preparation for the new program, ALL residential recycling carts will be picked up and removed from the residences Tuesday, May 28 through Saturday, June 1, 2013. The carts will be cleaned and returned to residences who sign up for the new program. Residents who wish to continue to participate in the new City of Douglas Recycling Program need to fill out a “Residential Recycling Cart Request Form” and submit it to the Utility/Collections Department at City Hall no later than June 5, 2013. These forms may be obtained at www.cityofdouglas.com/recycling or by visiting the Utility/Collections Department at City Hall. Customers should be aware that the first recycling collection will not take place until Friday, June 14th. Residential curbside recycling (blue) collection will be every other Friday for residents who have a Recycling Cart Request Form on file at City Hall.
Commercial front load collection will be at various times weekly. Commerical front load type services will be provided to all businesses requiring services with 2, 4, 6, 8 cubic yard containers to be serviced from one to five times each week. One (1) free rolloff will be provided in wards or neighborhoods each month for customer use. Residents will be able to take advantage of two junk free weeks each year. During these Junk Free Weeks, customers will be allowed to dispose of their large, non-hazardous household items at the City Pole Yard at NO charge to the customer. Collection services will be provided for C & D material for an additional fee.
