The City of Douglas and South Georgia State College have been named Best Overnight Town and Best Overnight Campsite by the Bicycle Ride Across Georgia (BRAG). This honor is voted on by the riders who participate in BRAG.
“Our riders love to come to a town that welcomes them, and Douglas certainly rolled out its red carpet for the cyclists,” said Vicki Thompson, BRAG Ride Director. “Riders thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Douglas and to South Georgia State College. South Georgia State College received high marks for its large gym, indoor pool, and convenient location.”
The Bicycle Ride Across Georgia visited Douglas June 4 – 6, 2013, and brought with it approximately 800 cyclists and their families. South Georgia State College served as the overnight campsite. Participants enjoyed activities such as swimming in SGSC’s indoor pool and the City of Douglas pool, attending a reception sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the Annual Beach Bash in downtown Douglas, watching a K9 demonstration by the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department and visiting with the Douglas Fire Department mascots, enjoying a movie night at SGSC, and touring Broxton Rocks at night with the Nature Conservancy of Georgia.
“BRAG loves Douglas and once again, we showed these visitors hospitality at its best,” said Douglas Mayor James Dennis. “We owe a special thanks to the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce, the Nature Conservancy of Georgia, El Potro Restaurant, Sonic, Rockin’ Roll Bowlin’, Your Yogurt, the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department, the City of Douglas Police Department, the City of Douglas Fire Department, CRMC, the Georgia State Patrol, our local officials, and all of the community who helped to make these visitors feel welcome during their stay.”
SGSC President Virginia Carson added, “It is indeed an honor to receive this special recognition as the tour’s best overnight campsite and to know our guests appreciated the quality facilities and many benefits SGSC has to offer. I echo the mayor and want to express my appreciation to the many individuals and community partners who assisted in hosting BRAG. It was a team effort and we all take pride in these significant achievements.”
BRAG is an annual bicycle ride that many out-of-state and out-of-country bicyclists enjoy each year. For 34 years, cyclists have visited different regions of Georgia and travelled across the state on bicycle. Since this is not a race, cyclists travel at their own pace and with their families along the set route. Douglas, as well as South Georgia State College, has been chosen as a host site since 1994.
