[ARCHIVED] LARRY STEVEN CARTER, JR. RECEIVES POLICE DEPARTMENT PURPLE HEART AND OFFICER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Officer Larry Steven Carter, Jr. received the Purple Heart Award for his bravery in the line of duty and Officer of the Year from the Douglas Police Department at the October 27th City Commission Meeting.

On July 10, 2014 Officer Carter attempted a traffic stop which erupted in gunfire. A passenger in the vehicle aimed a .40 caliber handgun at Officer Carter. Officer Carter drew his own weapon and took cover. The suspect began to run and shoot at Officer Carter who was pursuing the suspect on foot. Officer Carter was shot in his left leg and still continued the chase. After a great distance, Officer Carter lost sight of the suspect. Since this incident, Officer Carter has made full recovery and has eagerly returned to work.

There is no doubt that Officer Larry Steven Carter, Jr's actions during the early morning hours of July 10, 2014, reflect great credit upon himself, his chosen profession, and the City of Douglas Police Department. His actions show a level of dedication and perseverance that set a valued example for other officers and his young son to follow in life.

In addition to receiving the Purple Heart Award, Officer Carter also received a plaque that states the following:
To all who shall see these presents, greetings.
Awarded in the name of the Chief of Police, Douglas, Georgia.
