The City of Douglas urges citizens to help clean up Douglas by not littering or digging through dumpsters at businesses. Citizens who dispose of items in another person’s privately owned or business dumpster without the owner’s permission are committing a crime. It is illegal to dumpster dive or dispose of trash in another person’s trash container or dumpster. Offenders could face a penalty of a fine up to $1,000.
“Our citizens should take action to make our community a better place,” says City Manager Terrell Jacobs. “Any dumpster that is not locked can open the doors to dumpster diving or illegal dumpster use. We urge businesses to purchase locks and place the locks on the dumpster to prevent dumpster diving or illegal dumping.”
Local business owners can lock their dumpsters without having to lock/unlock the dumpster on days to be emptied by Transwaste. Citizens should not illegally dump items in private or business dumpsters. If needed, citizens may request additional trash carts for their residence. Citizens with brown/white goods that need to be disposed of, can participate in residential Community Junk Drop Off days, which are held monthly. The next residential Community Junk Drop Off day will be June 18, 2016 at Eastside Park. If a citizen needs to dispose of brown/white goods pickup prior to or after drop days, the citizen should schedule pickup through Transwaste by calling 912-384-6001.
As a part of the “Shame on You” Anti-Litter and Beautification Program, offenders who are caught in the act of dumpster diving, littering, or illegally dumping, will be posted on the City’s social media platforms and Channel 13. Citizens are encouraged to report littering and litterbugs to the See Something, Say Something line at 311 or 912-384-3302.
