At the City Commission meeting on Monday, December 12, 2016, the Mayor and City Commissioners voted to amend alcoholic beverage ordinance which will allow alcoholic beverages to be consumed and sold on Sundays. Douglas citizens were given the chance to vote on the ordinance in November during the primary election. Citizens voted to allow Sunday sales of alcoholic beverages as well as Sunday sales, for consumption of alcoholic beverages.
The amended alcoholic beverage ordinance took effect on December 12, 2016. Citizens should be aware of the exceptions to the days, hours and sale of the amended alcoholic beverage ordinance. The sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, on Sundays, are from 12:30 p.m. until 12:00 midnight in any licensed establishment which derives at least 50 percent of its annual gross sales from the sale of prepared meals or food and meets the definition of a restaurant in this section. Class II license or retail sales will be allowed on Sunday, between the hours of 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. The Bowling Alley/Bowling Center will be allowed to sell on Sundays, between the hours of 12:30 p.m. to 12:00 midnight. Sales of alcoholic beverages are prohibited on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
